Re: NCHSAA Spring Board Meeting

The 2007 Spring Board of Directors meeting of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association is now complete and there are some major rule changes for high school wrestling. It must be noted that this information is being released prior to the minutes of the NCHSAA meeting and full details on these changes are unknown at this time. Known changes for the upcoming 2007-2008 wrestling season are as follows:

Double elimination will be in effect for all rounds of the NCHSAA regional tournaments. The NCHSAA is granting a two-year trial statewide to study this format.

Midyear hydration testing and midyear weight certification are eliminated.

North Carolina will now follow the weight management program of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).

The 2 pound growth allowance may be moved to an earlier date in January.

The number of matches per season will be restricted. No more than 55 matches will be allowed prior to the Conference Tournament. Two day, “double duals” are being limited to no more than one per season.

Mercer University Wrestling Print E-mail
Written by Kevin Andres -- Mercer University Wrestling Coach

Dear Coach & Parents,

My name is Kevin Andres, and I coach the wrestling program at Mercer University. I would like to introduce you to our program and let you know about an exciting opportunity for your wrestlers to continue their wrestling careers in college.

My program is part of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, which includes over 100 colleges of all sizes. The NCWA is entering its tenth season and has grown in size and competition every year.

I am looking to the future and the exciting possibility of your wrestlers joining this up-and-coming program. We’re looking for student athletes who have strong leadership abilities, excellent work ethics, and who demonstrate the ability to be good campus citizens. I don't necessarily need state champions--just young men (regardless of their level of experience) who just love to wrestle. They should be willing to learn both in the classroom and in the wrestling room to help build this program. Everyone in the program is guaranteed to get at least ten matches next year. Depending on their skill level, the starters will get as many as thirty or thirty-five matches.

I would be happy to answer any questions you or your wrestlers might have, so feel free to call (478-301-2868) or email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Thank you,

Kevin Andres
Mercer University Wrestling Coach (NCWA)
Macon, GA

PS: Mercer University offers many academic scholarships and I have a meeting with the school next week about the school offering wrestling scholarships.

Every Wrestler's Last Match Print E-mail
Written by Old School Wrestler
Wednesday, 21 February 2007
There comes a time when every wrestler realizes his competitive career is over. Exactly when that moment occurs varies for every wrestler. For some, that realization takes place in advance of their last match; those wrestlers walk out onto the mat knowing it ends after that match. Others get caught up in the race for the top and don’t really want to think about what may be their last match. It is difficult to put an end to something to which you have given so much of yourself. However, sooner or later, every wrestler grasps the reality that he has wrestled his last match, and for many, it will happen this weekend.
