On a fall evening in 2004, Coach Chuck Smith handed me the reins of the Rhino Wrestling Club. Among the myriad of things my mentor imparted on me that night was a clear concise statement. “You have to get belts, Marty. The kids love them and they deserve to get them. They wrestle their butts off and deserve the best we can get them.”

Coach Smith’s philosophy always kept the kids’ interests foremost in our minds. Running tournaments never made us a lot of money. We focused on getting the most mat time for the wrestlers, increasing the level of competition and handing out as many awards as we could. I don’t think there is a time where we did not medal down to fourth place and am sure that over the last ten years or so we have generally given awards out to sixth place finishers. We continue that tradition today and end each year with enough money to start the next and not much extra.

After two years of having tournaments weathered out and absorbing the resulting financial loss, we found ourselves in a position to host a tournament that awarded a championship belt to its victors. Those Rhino eXtreme belts now hold special spots on the walls of wrestler’s rooms from Pennsylvania to North Carolina. This year may see them on the walls of wrestlers from Ohio and Florida and every state in between.

ASU's own newspaper, The Appalachian, caught up with wrestling head coach Paul Mance for the "Getting to Know Your Coach" feature.

If you could change the ASU mascot, what would you change it to and why?

“I wouldn’t change it. I graduated from Appalachian. I went to school here back in the ‘60s, and I love the Appalachian Mountaineers.”
“I wouldn’t change anything about it; I love the Black and Gold, and love the Mountaineers. The only thing I might change is that I would change us back to an old gold because I like the old gold much better than I do the bright gold.”

Jamie Gibbs was named the new head wrestling coach for The University of North Carolina at Pembroke in July 2006.  Gibbs previous coaching job was as the head assistant coach at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he was head assistant coach.  UNCP Athletic Director Dan Kenney stated that UNCP conducted a nationwide search for “someone with passion for and experience in college wrestling” and “who has a genuine concern for the student-athletes he would work with.”

Coach PJ Smith, who retired this year after 25 years as the head coach at UNCP, said, “Jamie comes from a top notch program, and I believe he will take our program to the next level. Not only does he know wrestling, but he is an excellent recruiter as well." I caught up with Coach Gibbs towards the end of November just prior to the Pembroke Classic and after media day.
