Team North Carolina Captures USA East Coast Duals Print E-mail

East Coast Duals team The NCUSA East Coast Dual Team traveled to Fairfax, Virginia over Memorial Weekend and returned home with the freestyle tournament championship. The event fielded 10 teams from eight different states. Many of the top high school wrestlers in the Eastern part of the USA competed in this tournament. Wrestlers that competed in this tournament had won (46) high school state championships, (48) state placments, (13) all-american honors, (5) national championships and featured (1) world team member.

Chip Powell - East Coast Duals The first day of competition was in freestyle. Team North Carolina won their pool by defeating Virginia Silver 41-26, New York 53 -13, Maine 38-28, and Connecticut 44-27. This set up the freestyle championship match the Virginia Gold team. In this match North Carolina wrestlers defeated (4) Virginia high school state champions, (2) state runners-up and a state third place winner. Shane Parrish (Northwest Guilford) got North Carolina on the scoreboard first by scoring a second period pin at 98 lbs. Virginia then won the next three weight classes before Brandon Davis (Greensboro Page) won a decision over Virginia's state 3rd place winner Shane Gentry at 125lbs. Virginia won the next weight class at 130lbs, but team North Carolina countered by winning the next two weight classes. Phil Goodwin (South Point) defeated Virginia state runner-up Marty Carlson at 135lbs. This was followed by Alex Winn (Eden Morehead) defeating Virginia state champion Joe Pantaleo at 140lbs. Virginia captured the 145lb weight class by scoring a pin, but team North Carolina got their momentum going by winning the next four weight classes. At 152lbs Chip Powell (SE Guilford) scored a tech fall over Virginia state champion Stephen Ours. This was followed at 160lbs when Chris Bullins (McMichael) scored a first period pin over two-time Virginia state champion Sam Rakes. Austin Trotman (Mt Tabor) then defeated two-time Virginia state champion Andrew Clement by a decision at 171lbs. At 189lbs Anthony Clinton (Mt Tabor) secured the team title for North Carolina with a decision over Virginia state runner-up Max Huntley. Virginia scored a tech fall and a pin in the next two weight classes but it was not enough as Team North Carolina prevailed by winning the dual meet 32-27.

Bus and team On Sunday team North Carolina finished third in the greco roman competition. Their only loss was to Florida (35-30) in a dual meet that was not decided until the final weight class. Florida went on to defeat Virginia for the greco championship. Team North Carolina finished up undefeated in freestyle with a 5-0 record. They were 4-1 in greco roman. The Team was coached by Ronnie Sigmon and John Bullins. David Haney was the team photographer and tour bus driver.
