North Carolina's Top Prospects for 2008
Other Wrestlers to Watch:

(11) Ian Coggin - Sr, Chapel Hill (119lbs) 3A (17-2) career finishes (2-3-2)

Coggin is a two-time state runner-up.  He placed 3rd as a sophomore.  At the East Coast Duals, he defeated Maine's four-time state champion Jerimah Barcak in Greco.  Coggin recently competed in the USAW Junior Duals and is a 2007 Fargo National Team member.

(12) Savva Kostis - Sr, Watauga, (140lbs/145lbs) 4A (38-2) career finishes (SQ-2)

Kostis is an accomplished and polished wrestler.   He was a state runner-up last season.  His only two high school losses were to senior state champion Lawrence Manns of West Forsyth.  In June Kostis was the NHSCA National Open Runner-up at 145lbs.

(13) Anthony Rogers - Sr, Knightdale (171lbs/189lbs) 4A (53-5) career finishes (2)

Rogers was a state runner-up in 2007.   He lost by a 18-7 major decision to Trotman in the state finals.  Rogers competed in the Disney Duals with Team North Carolina last June.  He was the WRAL champion at 171lbs this season.

(14) Larry Barron - Sr, Parkland (189lbs) 3A (71-9) career finishes (2)

Barron was a state runner-up in 2007 at 189lbs.  He has developed into a solid wrestler over the last two seasons.  Baron was impressive at the WRAL where he was the 189lb runner-up.  He lost a close 3-1 (OT) decision to champion Anthony Clinton.   Barron was the 189lb "King of the Mat" champion.   He is a 184lb college prospect.

(15)  Alex Winn - Sr, Morehead (145lbs) 4A (64-5) career finishes (SQ, DNQ, 3)

Winn is an accomplished and smart wrestler.  He was a state qualifier as a freshman, but he did not qualify as a sophomore.  Last year, he placed 3rd in the state tournament.  He advanced to the semi-finals where he lost in over time to senior two-time defending state champion Phillip Goodwin of South Point.  He rebounded from this to place 3rd finishing the season with a (64-5) record.  At the East Coast Duals in May, Winn defeated Virginia state champion Joe Pantaleo.  Winn possess another quality coveted by college recruiters, a high GPA.  Winn is in the running to be the top student in his senior class at Morehead high school next year.  Winn can beat very good wrestlers, but his wrestling can be inconsistent.  At the Super-32 he defeated one of the nation's best (RJ Pena - Oregon), but then Winn failed to place finishing (3-2).  At the Morehead tournament on December 8th Winn lost to North Carolina state runner-up Ethan Creek of Jack Britt.  He was the runner-up at 152lbs at the "King of the Mat" tournament where he lost a decision to Michael Williams in the finals..   Winn is projected as a 141lb college prospect.

(16)  Josh Gossett - Sr, TC Robertson (189lbs/215lbs) 4A (53-3) career finishes (SQ, INJ, 1)

Gossett is a multi-sport athlete.  He excels in both wrestling and football.  He missed his sophomore season due to a ACL injury in football that year.  Gossett was a state qualifier as a freshman, and as a junior he won his first state championship at 189lbs compiling a (53-3) record for the season.  He has great strength, quickness and a knowledge of wrestling.  Gossett has not compted in the spring, summer or fall.  He has also not competeted in any tough tournaments so far this season, thus the slide in his ranking.  Gossett is projected as a 197lb prospect for wrestling.

(17)  tie - Jose Sanchez - Sr, Mt Pleasent (130lbs) 2A (54-4) career finishes (2,1)

Sanchez was a state runner-up as a sophomore.   He won his first state championship in 2007 helping propel his team (Mt Pleasent) to win the state 1A/2A state tournament championship.  Sanchez is considered a favorite to win his second state championship in 2008.  Sanchez is very quick, strong, and he has very good takedown skills.  Sanchez did not compete in the summer or fall.  He also has yet to compete with other top wrestlers so he has dropped to the Number 17th spot on this list.  Sanchez is projected at 133lb for college.

(17) tie - Lawrence White - Sr. Cary (130lbs) 4A (55-9) career finishes (4)
White placed 4th at last season's state tournament.  He has defeated 4A rival Scott Norris twice this season.

(18) Scott Norris - Sr, Green Hope (125lbs/130lbs) 4A (53-3) career finishes (SQ-SQ-2)

Norris placed 6th in the 2006 Ohio Tournament of Champions.  He was a 2007 North Carolina state runner-up.  Last summer Norris competed with Team North Carolina at the Disney Duals finishing with a 5-1. record.

(19) Tie - Victor Cresenzo - Sr. Morehead (152lbs) 3A (73-2) career finishes (SQ - 3)
Cresenzo was a state qualifier as a sophomore and placed 3rd as a junior.  Both of his loses during the season were to senior state runner-up Austin Reece.  Cresenzo defeated state champion Marcus Blue earlier during the season.  Cresenzo was the "King of the Mat" runner-up losing a close decision to Greg Gainey.  Cresenzo is a top student and carries a 4.2 GPA.

(19) Tie - Demario Leathers - Sr. Northern Durham (130lbs/135lbs) 4A (45-4) career finishes (SQ,4,4)
Leathers is a tough wrestler from a wrestling family.  He was a SQ as a freshman and a two-time state fourth place winner.  He was the top ranked 4A 130lber after the regional last season but did not wrestle his best at the state tournament.  Look for Leathers to rise through the rankings and he could win his first state championship this year.

(20) Patrick Graham - Sr, Ragsdale (112lbs) 3A (46-3) career finishes (1)

Graham was a state champion in 2007 at 103lbs.

Others:

Jesse McFarland - Sr, R-S Central (275lbs) 3A (50-14) career finishes (SQ - 1)

McFarland was a state qualifier in 2006 and he was a state champion in 2007 at 215lbs.

Martin Avery - Sr, Brevard (189lbs) 2A (36-6) career finishes (6, 2)

Avery was a state 6th place winner in 2006 and state runner-up in 2007.

Jed Martin - Sr, Surry Central (171lbs) 2A (35-3) career finishes (SQ, 2)

Martin was a state qualifier in 2006 and state runner-up in 2007.

Blake Salyer - Sr, Alexander Central (171lbs) 4A (?-?) career finishes (SQ - 5th - INJ)
Salyer is a two-time Fargo national team member and a two-time state qualifier.  At the 2007 state tournament Salyer had to withdraw from the tournament after an Inj Dft. in the quarter finals.  He was the WRAL runner-up at 171lbs.

Teague Little - Sr, Parkland (171lbs) 3A (49-4) career finishes (SQ - SQ)
Little wrestled for Lumberton HS the last three seasons.  He transfered to Parkland for his senior season.  He was a state qualifier as t freshman and placed 5th as sophomore.  Last season he did not wrestle in the state tournament due to a injury.  He was the WRAL 3rd place winner at 171lbs where he lost a major decision to Salyer.  He defeated Salyer less than a week later by winning a close decision in a dual meet.   Little is a 174lb prospect for college..

Luis Camacho - Sr, Parkland (171lbs) aA (49-4) career finishes (3rd)
Camacho was a state 3rd place winner last season at 135lbs.     Camacho was the 130lb WRAL champion and the 135lb "King of the Mat" champion.
