The St. Stephens wrestling team won the 36th Annual Indian Classic wrestling tournament Saturday. This tournament featured several of the top teams in the state and many of the state's top wrestlers. The Indians scored 223.5 points to out distance runners-up West Lincoln who finished with 149.5 team points. Six Indian wrestlers won an individual championship in the tournament. Kurt Stephens defeated Chapel Hill's Josh Craig by a 12-1 major decision to claim the 112lb championship. At 130lbs Travis Paap won a 7-0 decsion over Charlie Avis of Newton Conover. This was followed by Gunnar McDowell winning a hard fought 6-5 decision over Byron Beddingfield of Chapel Hill to capture the 135lb championship. In the next weight class another Indian won an Individual Championship. Sam Monish (140lbs) pinned Newton-Conover's Matt Owensby in 3:46. The 171lb weight class featured the third St. Stephens/Newton-Conover finals match up of the evening. St. Stephens' Logan Self came away with the win by pinning Shawn Mulligan in 2:37. The last Indian on the mat was Stephen Rink at 189lbs. Rink won this individual championship with a 1:40 pin over Alex Bustle of South Iredell . St. Stephens had two other wrestlers to finish as tournament runners-up. Brandon Lackey lost by pin (2:58) to Brad Owens of West Lincoln in the 145lb finals. In the 152lb finals Cody Rink was pinned in 3:05 by Nick Gregoris of Chapel Hill. Gregoris, a two time state champion, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Newton Conover took third place in the team honors scoring 139.5 points. Andrew Reinhardt won the 215lb Individual championship by pinning Nick Matlock of South Iredell in 1:32. Red Devil team mate Ethan Carter was the tournament runner-up at 160lbs where he lost a close 5-2 decision to Nico McGoria of West Rowan. Bunker Hill had one wrestler in the individual championship finals. Tee Lee was the tournament runner-up at 119lbs. Lee lost a 18-6 major decision to Chapel Hill's two-time state runner-up Ian Coggin. Chapel Hill ended up with three tournament champions. Joining Coggin and Gregoris was Cory Mock. Two-time state champion Cory Mock won the 125lb weight class with a 15-0 tech fall over Taylor Barber of West Lincoln. West Rowan came away with two tournament champions. Along with McGoria, Austin Perrel won the first finals contest of the evening. Perrelwon a 16-4 major decision over Nate Smith of North Lincoln at 103lbs. In the final match of the evening East Burke's Tyler Shatley claimed the 285lb individual championship. He defeated West Lincoln's Clay Hefner in a hard fought 2-0 decision.
