bradon davisThe first time I ever heard of Brandon Davis was in 2003 at the state tournament. All during the tournament several other coaches and wrestlers commented to me about the 103lb 4A kid that was so good on his feet. He won the state tournament that year, and since then he has gone on to accumulate a lot of accomplishments in wrestling. I have seen Brandon wrestle at many of the tournaments that I take my wrestlers to, but until this past month I have not gotten to know him personally. I had the pleasure of coaching Brandon at the East Coast Duals in May, where he showed many of the skills that have helped him become one of North Carolina's elite wrestlers. Many wrestlers have followed their dad or an older brother into wrestling, but one thing Brandon and his parents are very proud about is Brandon has accomplished a lot as a first generation wrestler?. I have found that not only is Brandon a great wrestler, he is a smart and interesting young man.

Here are some of the interesting things Brandon had to say.

Q - RS: How old were you and just how did you get into wrestling?
A - BD: When I was in the seventh grade the middle school AD, Coach Bunting, came to me one day and asked if I would wrestle for the middle school team. He said that I would only have to wrestle other kids that were 83lbs. At first I did not want to, but after I found out how much fun it was, I kept wrestling.

Q - RS: Do you participate in any other sports?
A - BD: No, just wrestling. When I was younger I played baseball, but not any more.

Q - RS: Do you participate in any other clubs or community activities?
A - BD: I participate in the youth group at church, and last year, I was a counselor-in-training at an arts and science camp at Virginia Tech. Other than that, I spend a lot of my time wrestling and practicing.

Q - RS: Who would you give credit to in helping you become the wrestler you have become?
A - BD: My parents have been big supporters for me. My club coaches, Larry, Clay, and Ty Reynolds have helped me a lot. They took me as a nothing and made me into a something in wrestling. I don't think I could have won my state championship without them. I also give Coach Barry Bunting credit for introducing me to the sport.

Q - RS: What are your short term goals for this summer and next season?
A - BD: I want to place in the top five at Fargo this summer. I want to win another state championship in high school next season.

Q - RS: What weight are you going to wrestle in Fargo and next season in high school?
A - BD: I am going 119lbs at Fargo and either 119lbs or 125lbs in high school next year.

Q - RS: What about your long term goals?
A - BD: I hope to wrestle in college. I want to get a scholarship to help with the cost. In college, I want to major in computer graphics and 3D arts, or maybe animation design.

Q - RS: How is your college recruiting coming along?
A - BD: I have gotten letters from a lot of schools, but no one has called me yet.

Q - RS: That is because the NCAA will not let a college coach call a rising high school senior until July 1st. By July, I expect you will receive a lot of calls. Who are some of the schools you are interested in that have sent you letters?
A - BD: I have gotten letters from Lehigh, Missouri, Columbia, NC State, and some others. I am really interested in Missouri, Central Michigan, Michigan State, and Ashland (Ohio) where my friend Kyle Kanga will wrestle next year.

Q - RS: What are your GPA and SAT scores?
A - BD: I have a 4.1 GPA and I made an 1180 in the math and verbal part of the SAT. With the essay, my total SAT score was 1730.

Q - RS: What are some of your wrestling accomplishments?
A - BD: I was a state champion as a freshman. In 2004, I was the cadet freestyle SE Regional Champion in Greenville, SC. I won FILA Cadet in Freestyle in Illinois the spring of 2005. Last fall, I won the Lock Haven tournament and the Super-32 tournament. This past year in high school I was a state runner-up. This spring, I was second in the FILA Jr. at Las Vegas and I placed third in the Western Regional also in Las Vegas. I was the runner-up in the Central Regional in Indiana and I was undefeated in the East Coast Duals in Fairfax, Virginia. All of that was in freestyle.

Q - RS: That is quite a bit of traveling. You also traveled to some other places for wrestling in the last year haven't you?
A - BD: Last summer I was on a team that traveled to Germany. We trained with a freestyle club in Berlin and competed in a tournament in Lukenwald. Last week I went to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Q - RS: You were able to go to the Olympic Training Center by placing in the top four at the FILA tournaments. How many other high school wrestlers were there last week?
A - BD: There was about forty other high school All-Americans there, training with the Olympic coaches and resident wrestlers.

Q - RS: How did you like the OTC?
A - BD: I got to work with Joe Heskett. I liked it a lot!

Q - RS: What else do you have planned for this summer?
A - BD: I am going to leave for the Disney Duals on Sunday. When I get back from there, I am going to an arts and science camp at UNC Greensboro where I will be a counselor-in-training. On July 9th, I will go back to Colorado Springs for more training, a few days after I get back from there we will leave for Fargo.

Q - RS: Brandon you have spent a lot of time and worked hard in wrestling. Good luck next week in Florida. I guess I will see you again when we leave for Fargo.
A - BD: Thank you, see you then.
