Luke
Rebertus is a Maryland wrestler. He goes to a private high school
in Delaware, not far from his home in Maryland. He won a state
championship as a freshman, wrestling for McDonough High School.
Last season he won a Delaware state championship, wrestling for Caravel
High School. Even more impressive are his accomplishments at
Fargo. The last two summers Luke has won the Cadet National
Championship in both Greco and Freestyle. Currently, Rebertus is
the #2 ranked junior in the nation. With another strong showing
at Fargo this summer, he could very well be the top ranked high school
wrestler in the nation next fall at 160lbs. Rebertus also has
very strong ties to North Carolina. His grandparents live in
Greensboro, so Luke occasionally shows up at various North Carolina off
season wrestling tournaments. He has attended the North Carolina
Developmental camp at UNC Pembroke the last six years. This was
where I got to know Luke two years ago.
Let's see what Luke has to say.
Q - RS: How old were you and just how did you get into wrestling?
A - LR: When I was eight years old my dad started taking
me to youth tournaments. I liked wrestling from the first and
have been doing it ever since.
Q - RS: Do you participate in any other sports?
A - LR: I use to play football and I played soccer when I
was a sophomore. My sophomore year I tore my ACL playing soccer
and missed my high school wrestling season. After that, I gave up
all other sports.
Q - RS: Do you participate in any other clubs or community activities?
A - LR: The high school I attend, Caravel Academy in
Delaware, requires us to complete 20 hours of community service before
we can graduate. I have helped middle and elementary school kids
with their science fairs. I also spend time helping at the
community library.
Q - RS: Who would you give credit to in helping you become the wrestler you have become?
A - LR: My father and mom for starting me in the sport and
sending me around the country to camps and tournaments to
compete. Also, my club coach and former high school coach, Matt
Zambanini, for helping make me a better wrestler.
Q - RS: Luke, you have won a lot of prestigious tournaments. What would you say is your most memorable match?
A - LR: I would have to say last year at Fargo in the
freestyle national championship. They have that match on a center
stage raised up about four feet off the floor. During the match
my opponent threw me off of the mat and I landed on my head on the
floor. After an injury time out, I came back and won the national
championship.
Q - RS: What are your short term goals for this summer and next season?
A - LR: I want to place in freestyle and win another Greco
national championship. Next spring, I want to win senior
nationals.
Q - RS: What weight are you going to wrestle in Fargo and next season in high school?
A - LR: I am going 160lbs.
Q - RS: What about your long term goals?
A - LB: I want to go to a big 10 or a big 12 school and
wrestle. My college plans are still open though and I will just
see what comes along.
Q - RS: How is your college recruiting coming along?
A - LR: I have gotten a lot of letters from different
schools. Some of these are: Virginia, Missouri, Michigan,
Pennsylvania, and Cornell.
Q - RS: What are your GPA and SAT scores?
A - LR: I have a 3.1 GPA and I made an 1100 on the SAT.
Q - RS: What are some of your wrestling accomplishments?
A - LR: I was a Maryland independent state champion and
national preps runner-up as a freshman wrestling for McDonough High
School in Maryland. That summer, I was the cadet national
champion in Fargo and I placed 7th in freestyle wrestling at
145lbs. My sophomore year I transferred to Caravel and missed the
wrestling season because of the ACL injury. Last summer though, I
was the cadet freestyle national champion and I placed 4th in Greco at
160lbs. Last wrestling season, I was a Delaware state champion at
160lbs.
Q - RS: You have also trained several times at the Olympic Training Center haven't you?
A - LR: Yes, I qualified for that by winning the cadet Greco championship in Fargo in 2004.
Q - RS: How many times have you been to the Developmental camp at UNC Pembroke?
A - LR: I have been here the last six years. I think
this camp is great! There are very good coaches here and there
are a lot of good wrestlers to work out with.
Q - RS: What other interest do you have besides wrestling?
A - LR: I enjoy fishing and camping with my dad.
RS: Luke, it has been great working with you the last few years here at camp. I'll see you in Fargo.
LR: Thank you, Coach Sigmon.
