Same here. Halfway through the season seems silly. Rule is designed for kids who are in the middle of puberty and beginning to grow and making a weight class gets more difficult. Thats not happening in 3 weeks. Either give the weight at the beginning or dont.

Yeah, I voted for having the weight allowance all season. There is only 7 weeks of competition before the Regionals on June 15th. May as well just give the weight the entire time.

Wrestling rules clinic is up and running. Finished mine last week. None of the above questions were answered. There is a committee working on these issues. I am assuming that our coaches association is involved in these decisions.

This will be a moot point in thirty days anyway. The State Rules Clinic will take place before the Wrestling Officials Testing opens on March 29th. And the grand plan will be unveiled.

Ive recently gotten word that several coaches are not even going to schedule matches the last two weeks of the season as to avoid potential exposures and then preventing them from attending regionals. Which is not a bad idea at all. Now that is potentially taking away 8 matches from that team. So the maximum matches anyone on that team would have is 20. And that is barring any other quarantine or possible weight management scenarios injuries etc... no system is going to be perfect but were going to need some sort of subjective system this year rather than a strictly objective system based on data.

On point with seeding, like I stated we need to be flexible and may need to do things differently this year. With all that is going on I agree a extra effort should be made to separate our hammers especially in that first round.

Having an actual seeding meeting would help. The current seeding meeting is pretty much a formality and you cant really petition to have a kid raised or lowered. With this low match count you could have a kid who maybe was hurt last year... so they dont have the previous state tournament seeding points... low matches this year because of whatever reason... Now they come in as a super low seed and knock out the second best guy in the bracket early because of the single elimination foolishness. Get together say "hey we know john smith is a hell of a wrestler even though it doesnt show it on paper. him and Joe Blow should not meet up first round" and you go from there. There are some super stud freshman coming in this year.. they wont have previous seeding points. And if their school gets quarantined for whatever reason they can come in and make big problems in the region. We can use the "gotta beat the best to be the best" logic all day which yeah sure absolutely but with single eliminations we need to have some sort of better system so you dont have major matchups happening before the semi finals.

Your assuming that a kid can get up to 28 matches. We need to be flexible, on minimum matches, kids program could get shutdown for 10 days or up to two weeks due to contact tracing. Some teams schedule will not permit 28 matches. These are uncharted waters we all are dealing with and we will need to flexible. I know this will be unpopular but why even have a 7 week season? More chances of being shutdown completely due to contact tracing. Have two tourneys, go into regionals and state tourney from that point. What is more important at this point? The season itself or regionals and state? I would offer we need to minimize the chances of being shutdown and focus on how to ensure the state tourney even happens.

So should a kid who is 1-0 be counted as a 100% win percentage? No minimum matches wrestled is not a good idea. I think it should be at least a 5 and maybe a 10 match minimum since kids can get up to 28 matches.

Regarding the regional tourney....
2A and 3A regions are all about 25-27 teams under the current unbalanced alignment. We do not need more than 16 per bracket in a one day tournament.
What we do need is wrestle backs from the quarterfinals and not the just the semi's!

I guess back to the original topic of the post, weight allowance any word? Season is so short it would be like changing the weight classes this year.

Since the Regionals are just one day with single elimination, why have a match minimum at all? What are the most number of schools assigned to a Regional, 18-22? Using existing Regional seeding criteria, just seed 1-18 or 22. One round of pigtails gets you to 16. Most schools will run 3 to 4 mats in a gym or 2. On Saturday weigh in at 7am and go home at 9pm. Based on single elimination, you would have reduced the tournament by what 2 or 3 rounds anyway. All sounds very doable.

I could agree with 5 on as short of a season we have.

I do not know if I would waive it completely. Kids already get points for seeding. Will Edmiston and Mike Dalton are prime examples of why the minimum should be in place due to injury. They both come back off an injury late in the year get the percentage points win the regional and make the state finals. Now should the minimum be amended for the short season absolutely. Go back to the 10 match minimum or even shorter with the short season. Just my opinion on the matter.

I would offer the minimum match needs to be waived. With only a 7 week season do we punish a athlete if they get injured or come into this short season with a injury and are not cleared to compete until say late may or early June. A lot of first are happening this season so waiving the minimum match only lines up with what we are dealing with this season.

In that same vein, what about regionals? Locations and min matches (assuming it will be less than 15).

Does anyone have any news on what NCHSAA is going to do with the wt. allowance for the upcoming HS season?
